Montana has plenty of backcountry to be explored on horseback that is otherwise inaccessible to those who have limited time and are on foot. Locally, one can find places to ride a horse in the Rattlesnake Recreation Area on the north end of town or up on Blue Mountain at the south end. If you are looking for horseback riding excursions in the Missoula area, or Montana in general, the following links will serve as a great resource.
